Gustavo Merino: Doping is Increasingly being Observed Among Amateur Athletes

“I am very pleased to be in Baku to participate in the statutory meetings held within the framework of the International Convention against Doping in Sport.”

According to AZERTAC, Gustavo Merino, UNESCO Director for Social Policy and Inclusion, made the remarks in Baku during the third official meeting of the Approval Committee of the Fund for the Elimination of Doping in Sport, held within the framework of UNESCO’s International Convention against Doping in Sport.

According to Merino, the Convention's main objective is to prevent doping and other negative practices in sport.

“Such practices not only undermine the integrity of sport and the principles of fair play, but also have a negative impact on the health and well-being of athletes. This issue is increasingly being observed among amateur athletes as well,” he said.

Gustavo Merino thanked Azerbaijan for hosting the forum and noted that participants exchanged views on several important issues.

“During the forum, we discussed current issues related to promoting integrity in sport, implementing the Convention, and further strengthening clean sport,” he said.
