In 1999, an information-training centre was established in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic with the financial support of UNDP and technical support of UNESCO.
On December 15-23, 2000, and on 5-13 February, 2001, audio-visual courses were held at Baku State University’s Faculty of Journalism with the financial support of UNESCO.
In 2005, “Medical Manuscripts of Azerbaijan” were included in the Memory of the World Register of UNESCO. On November 14, 2009, a seminar on the subject of “Climate Change and Azerbaijan” was organized by UNESCO Office in Moscow, National Commission of the Republic of Azerbaijan for UNESCO and AZERTAG State News Agency. The aim of the seminar was to raise professional skills of environmental journalists.
In December 2010, the Chairperson of the National Commission of the Republic of Azerbaijan Mr. Elmar Mammadyarov approved the Statue of the Committee on Information for All Programme of UNESCO under the National Commission of the Republic of Azerbaijan for UNESCO, and the Committee was established. Following the 12 April, 2011 decision of Mr. Elmar Mammadyarov, Ms. Latifa Mammadova, Head of the Library Sector of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Azerbaijan, was designated Chair of the Information for All Committee of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
In 2011, Azerbaijan was elected to UNESCO’s to the Intergovernmental Council of the UNESCO International Programme for the Development of Communication for a four- year term. On December 1-2, 2011, an International Conference on “The role of teachers in knowledge society: policy, pedagogy, social customs” was organized in Baku by UNESCO’s Institute of Information Technologies, UNESCO, Ministry of Communication and Information of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Ministry of Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan. Over 20 international experts from Turkey, Russia, Malaysia, Slovakia, Finland, Netherlands, Ukraine, Italy, Lithuania and Belarus, as well as 60 experts from Azerbaijan, participated in this Conference.
The establishment of UNESCO Chair “Human Rights and Right to Information” at Baku State University was agreed upon with UNESCO and in 2015, contract was signed between the parties.
