Azerbaijan's membership in UNESCO's program is a testament to the importance placed on preserving biological diversity in our country
2023-11-17"Azerbaijan's membership in UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere program signifies the international recognition of efforts in preserving biological diversity in our country."
In his statement to AZƏRTAC, Rashad Allahverdiyev, the national coordinator for UNESCO and an official from the Service of Protection of Biodiversity, highlighted Azerbaijan's election as a member of the International Coordinating Council of UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere (MAB) program for the years 2023-2027 with overwhelming support. According to him, this marks the first time Azerbaijan has become a member of any UNESCO program specifically dedicated to the protection of biodiversity.
Rəşad Allahverdiyev also provided information about the activities of the aforementioned international organization and the significance of Azerbaijan's membership: "UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere (MAB) program is based on the conservation of biological diversity and the sustainable development of biological diversity components by human societies and local communities. It aims to promote the sustainable use of nature by humans, establish biosphere reserves, support communities living within these reserves, and provide tools for their sustainable use of nature."
Azerbaijan's membership in this organization means that UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere (MAB) program will provide technical support to the biosphere nomination documents prepared by our country. These documents outline projects aimed at enabling continuous human use of natural areas without harming the surrounding environment.
Additionally, creation of biological reserves in cross-border areas with neighboring states will be stimulated.
The official also added that membership in the International Coordinating Council is a key factor in shaping Azerbaijan's impact at the international level in the conservation of biodiversity. It supports Azerbaijan in fulfilling its global commitments in this field.
