Kelaghayi tour organized to Shaki

 

On November 26, 2014, “Traditional art and symbolism of Kelaghayi, making and wearing women’s silk headscarves” was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Each year on November 26, Kelaghayi Day is celebrated in Azerbaijan. On November 25-26, the Azerbaijan Carpet Museum organized a two-day tour to the homeland of kelaghayi, one of the most beautiful regions of Azerbaijan – Sheki. During the tour participants first visited “Sheki-Ipek” Open Joint Stock Company. They were informed about the history of the company, its development and present position. The guests got acquainted with the process of obtaining yarn, manufacturing and checking silk fabrics. On the following workshop, guests received information about silk fabric washing, pattern printing and dyeing processes. Here were organized master classes of pattern making. During the workshop on dying, participants were given detailed information on the use of natural dyes. Guests also visited Shaki Khan Palace, Museum of Applied Art, which is situated in an Albanian temple.
